Every autumn our boutique goes through a quiet but important change: the Dutch hydrangea season comes to an end, and we gradually switch to Colombian hydrangeas. Here is how they differ and what it means for your bouquets.
Why hydrangeas have a season
Hydrangea is a seasonal flower. In the Netherlands it is grown in greenhouses and fields, and the best blooms come from late spring to mid-autumn. As the days get shorter, the Dutch hydrangea finishes its cycle: the heads become smaller, autumn “antique” tones appear and the colour range narrows.
Where winter hydrangeas come from
Colombia grows hydrangeas in the Andean highlands, where the temperature is even and the sun is steady all year round — so the flower is in season almost permanently. That is why from autumn to spring most high-quality hydrangeas in Europe are Colombian. We are switching now so your bouquets keep their fresh, full heads.
How they differ
- The head. Colombian hydrangeas are usually dense and even, with a large rounded head. Dutch ones in autumn tend to be lighter and airier.
- Colour. Colombia means clean classic colours first of all: white, soft pink, blue and green. Late-season Dutch hydrangeas often show muted autumn shades — with green, bordeaux and dusty pink.
- The journey. Colombian hydrangeas fly to Europe, so their way to us is longer. We select them carefully and let them rest in water before arranging.
What this means for you
Hydrangea bouquets stay in our catalogue — only the origin of the flower changes. During the first weeks of the switch the shades may differ slightly from the photos. If a particular colour matters to you, mention it in the order comment — we will pick the closest one or suggest an alternative.
Caring for hydrangeas at home
- Cut the stem at an angle with sharp secateurs and place it in clean, cool water — hydrangeas drink a lot.
- Change the water every day and keep the bouquet away from radiators, direct sun and draughts.
- If the head droops, submerge it fully in cool water for 30–40 minutes — it usually revives.
- Hydrangeas also drink through their petals, so a light mist does them good.
